Introduction (IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ)
Before reading further, keep in mind that this
advice is coming from my own personal experience. I am not an official Duelist
King Tournament judge. I am just another duelist just like you who is eager to
learn and be a better duelist. So, whether you take my advice or not is up to
you. I am not responsible if the advice I give does not help you. If anything I
say offends you as a fan of the TV show, I am apologizing in advance. Also you might want to get a drink or a snack because this is a long read.
Seperating Fact from Fantasy
Most duelists, especially kids, have seen the Yugioh!
Television show. I watch the show from time to time, to see some strategies or
theme decks the characters use. Some of them are pretty good, but like the old
saying goes, "Don’t believe everything you see on TV."
The way Yugi and the other characters duel is not the same
as the real world. They use “different rules” when they play certain cards. For
example, Joey’s “Graverobber” Trap Card works completely different from the
real world. In the real world, “Graverobber” can only take Magic/Spell cards,
and depending on the situation, you have to pay Life Points in order to use
your opponent’s Magic/Spell Card. Also, there is no such thing as “The Heart of
the Cards”. You might be lucky if you draw a specific card you need to win a duel,
but you can’t just wish for a card and expect to draw it every time.
If you want to duel in the real world, READ CAREFULLY
the rulebook from the Starter Deck, or go online to www.yugioh-card.com to
learn the basics on how to duel. You’d be surprised how many duelists don’t
know the basic Phases of a duel.
So You Want a Undefeatable Deck?
I am sorry to say that no deck is unbeatable.
There are strong decks that seem unbeatable, but you should know that every
deck has a weakness. It’s your job as a duelist to identify the weakness or
strategy of your opponent’s deck, and turn it against him/her. If you could
master this skill, you are already halfway into becoming a better duelist. We’ll
discuss deck strategies later on.
Let's Begin...What Cards Do You Like?
Every card in the Yugioh! Trading Card Game is powerful, IF
you know how to use it properly. When building a deck, choose what cards you
want to see in your duels. Most duelists pick their favorite Monster Card and
build their decks around that monster. Generally, this is how most decks are
made. However, the common problem that most beginning duelists have is choosing
the “right” cards to support their Main Monster. Also, what happens when you
can’t use your main Monster? What do you do?
Basically what I’m trying to say is, pick your
favorite Monster, but also your second, third, etc. favorite Monster just in
case you can’t summon your Main Monster. Also, if you do summon your Main
monster, pick cards that protect and enhance your monster. Otherwise, summoning
your favorite monster and seeing your opponent destroy it on his/her next turn is
pointless.
